Winning business with social media
Wednesday, April 25, 2012 - 13:15

Hello Business is all about educating and informing members of the business community about digital and how they can use it to expand their business. With that in mind, we’ve put together some basic principles of how to use social media to win business.

The key to using social media in this way is engagement. Tweeting or posting alone won’t generate sales unless the content is engaging, no matter how many followers you have. Ask questions, do competitions, promote offers, anything that creates a dialogue with another user. If you sell a product, offer to send out some small free samples to your followers.

Participating in conversations on industry topics is essential for getting your business seen and heard by key people, but it’s paramount that you know your stuff first. If you’re joining a conversation, make informed and well thought out responses showing that you know your industry inside out. Participating like this will make you seem more credible and quash any reservations someone might have about you and your service. Take some time and put the academics in behind what you’re saying.

However, before you start engaging you have to create the groundwork. There’s no point jumping in and following every key person and company before your online persona is built. The most important factor here is your Twitter bio, this needs to outline your service or product and contain all the key words. You’ll probably only have one chance to gain a key industry member as a follower and if your bio and page aren’t ready, they won’t be coming back to you anytime soon. Creating this online persona with key words will help with your SEO too.

Facebook in particular is particularly good to engage with other brands you see your brand associating with, or other products to your demographic. Like all these pages and share any interesting posts, this way you aren’t bombarding anyone with a sales pitch, just sharing interesting nuggets of information which link you to that brand. Facebook doesn’t have the character limitations that Twitter does, and it’s also a more personal form of communication so maintain a chattier tone for Facebook and write more detailed posts.

Now the foundations have been laid and you’re in full Tweeting and Facebooking swing; keep content regular and carry on.

How to use LinkedIn successfully
Tuesday, April 10, 2012 - 10:45

Your objectives
The first thing to establish is your objective for being on LinkedIn; this should be the underlying guide to your whole online presence. Whether it is for networking or job seeking, think about your goals and let them drive the content and the feel of your profile.

Choose a respectable photo
This really isn’t the place for a drunken holiday snap. Choose a respectable headshot that you’d be happy for potential clients or employers to see.

Join groups and participate
LinkedIn is a great place to interact with similar people in your industry. Join any trade associations, governing bodies or institutes that are relevant to your job, interact with key players by participating in discussions or sharing industry news.

Make the most of your headline
Your headline doesn’t just have to be your current position, depending on your objectives consider what you want people to know. If you’re job hunting this can be perfect place to state what you’re seeking. As long as your headline communicates your profession and your skills in a concise way, you can use it to target effectively.

Share
This goes back to participating with groups, but share any interesting news articles or features on your page. Sharing news will also improve your visibility on your connections’ news feed.

Check out the competition
This is a golden opportunity for some cheeky spying on your competitors. Look at how they are using LinkedIn and how they are interacting with clients and people in the industry. If they are doing it well, think about what you can take and reproduce for your own advantage.

Add sections
LinkedIn allows you to add all sorts of sections to your profile, such as volunteering, languages and even travelling. This can be a good chance to show off how well-rounded you are, and can act as ice breakers with new connections.

Social media in March – 5 things that got us talking
Thursday, March 29, 2012 - 13:18

As March draws to a close, it’s time to look back on the things that caught our eye in the world of social media this month and why they got us talking.

Kony video
Whether you agree with the cause or not, there is no denying that the 30min video by the group Invisible Children exploded across social media platforms on 7th March.
The video, which alleges to expose the actions of Joseph Kony in Uganda, hit 100 million views in six days making it the fastest trending topic in history and the quickest video to go viral. Celebrities and the like all joined in the hype, promoting the Twitter hashtags #stopkony and #kony2012, helping the video reach its dizzy viral heights.

Starbucks’ free lattes
A nice little stunt by Starbucks on the 14th of this month, which saw the coffee giant give out free lattes to its customers until midday. The stunt was to promote its new scheme whereby baristas write customers names on takeaway cups, and call out the names of the customers when the drinks are ready. Obviously, the campaign soon climbed up the social media ladder, with the incentive being shared across Facebook and Twitter. After all, no one can resist a freebie.

iPad 3
This mouth also saw the launch of Apple’s highly anticipated iPad 3. Hoping to continue the success of its previous models, the technology giant claims the product offers a whole host of enhancements, including a retina display and LTE technology (Long Term Evolution). Inevitably, the queues began days before the product actually went on sale on March 16th, with some people queuing for 4 days outside Apple stores to ensure they’d be the first to get their hands on the goods.

Fabrice Muamba
#PrayingforMuamba became a trending topic on Twitter on March 17th with people wishing support for Fabrice Muamba, who collapsed during the first half of the Tottenham vs. Bolton football game.
Now Muamba is out of the immediate danger zone and making a steady recovery, many felt the huge influx of prayers that burst over Twitter were partly accountable. With many using this as an example to prove that worship works, some Christian MP’s jumped on the bandwagon and tried to overhaul a ban on an ad that claimed ‘God can heal’, asking for undisputed proof that prayers don’t work. Tricky.

Angelina Jolie’s leg
Technically this happened in the last few days of February, but it’s too good to leave out. Following Angelina Jolie’s dramatic pose in a high slit dress at the 2012 Academy Awards, a whole host of copycat pictures or ‘memes’ appeared over the internet of her right leg in unusual places. Some of the best memes included Jolie’s right leg at the moon landing, featuring on the Statue of Liberty, and dubiously placed in various famous paintings.
Jolie’s right leg even got its own Tumblr blog and Twitter account with 48,000 followers. The account follows two other celebrity body parts, including Bradley Cooper’s moustache.

5 top tips for a successful Social Media campaign
Wednesday, March 21, 2012 - 14:00

Social media is a powerful tool for any business to build relationships, engage with an audience and increase brand awareness. However used in the wrong way it can have the opposite effect. Simply follow these 5 golden rules of social media and you’ll be well on your way to making your campaign a success.

Professional
Never forget who your audience are. Always keep your messages professional; no swearing, correct grammar and punctuation and especially no bad mouthing companies or brands. Obviously posts should reflect the tone of voice you want to create for your brand, but don’t cross any lines as you could end up in very hot water.

Engagement
The success of a social media campaign is not how many followers you have but rather the level of engagement. It’s more important to have a few hundred core followers who re-tweet and participate in your discussions rather than having thousands of mute followers.

Content
Posts should always be thought through. They should not be impulsive or emotional and certainly not a sales pitch. Posts should add value to followers free of charge, despite what some people think. Good content will encourage sharing and increase brand awareness, whilst subtly reinforcing key messages.

Consistency
The only way people will engage with you over social media is if you are consistent and frequent with your posts. You have to stick with it, and be sure to post a few times daily depending on what content you are pushing out. Being consistent in this way will help engagement and build relationships with your core followers. However it’s important not to be overly zealous and spam your followers, this quite frankly will annoy people who will get rid of you just to cleanse their feeds.

Kudos
Social media works well when you are generous. There’s nothing wrong with a big of self-promotion but just watch what happens when you say nice things about other people/companies. Re-tweeting on Twitter is a fantastic way of quickly sharing the love.

Building brands with the new Facebook Timeline
Thursday, March 15, 2012 - 09:45

On 30th March all Facebook brand pages will be switched to the new timeline function. So it’s important to make sure brand pages are ready for the new format. You can rebuild your page on Facebook before publishing it out to the world. Here are some top tips from Hello Business to get you ready for the change.

Cover photos
The biggest visual change is the addition of cover photos to the pages. This is the largest visual space on the page so can be used for promotions, news or anything related to the brand. It’s the first thing users will see when they click onto your page, so make sure it conveys brand interest.

Apps
Gone are the days of an endless apps list, timeline allows just 3 prominent tabs in the area underneath the cover photo. Think carefully about which 3 features you want in prime display position on your page, after all these are the first things people are likely to see and interact with – so they should reflect the brand and push out content.

Pinning
One of the new functions of Facebook timeline is pinning. You can ‘pin’ a status to appear at the top of your timeline, which will precede any other content for 7 days. You can use this function for any promotions, making sure they are in prime position on the page. You could also use it for the companies birthday, possibly pinning something interested about the brand to show how its development since it was founded, maybe some old designs or – depending on your brand – a cheeky photo of the CEO.

Highlighting and milestones
You can highlight any post on the timeline by clicking the star icon in the top right corner. This will give the post the same dimensions as the cover photo, going over both columns on the page. You can also create milestones for the brand which will feature on the page and create a narrative with users, perhaps when the company was founded or any interesting turning points in its history.

Examples of some innovative uses of Facebook Timeline here.

Hello Business comes to an end
Monday, October 25, 2010 - 13:52

Last week saw months of preparation come to fruition as delegates from across the country arrived in Birmingham to take part in the Hello Business conference.
With over 500 tickets booked across the two days, this year’s Hello Business far surpassed previous years with an array of global speakers taking to the stand and offering insight and advice on a plethora of topics.

The 2-day conference began on Thursday 21st October at Zellig, located in the Custard Factory. Raj Mack Head of Digital Birmingham opened the day with a welcome to delegates which was closely followed by an inspiring presentation by Julie Meyer, co-founder of First Tuesday and CEO of Ariadne Capital on the future of digital media. Following the presentations, delegates then split off from the main group and attended a variety of sessions on topics such as hyperlocal news, open data and how traditional brands have made the switch to digital. Thursday concluded with an after-party held by the organisers of South by South West (SXSW).

Friday’s conference took on a different approach to the previous day; focusing more on how businesses can implement the various technologies available into their day-to-day processes. The morning started with an insight into what the European Union is doing to encourage digital implementation and investment, held by the EU Commissioner for the Digital Agenda, Neelie Kroes. This was closely followed by a keynote seminar from former global head of online marketing at Virgin Group, Alex Hunter. Alex divulged to a standing room only session the secret behind brand loyalty and what companies should be doing to stimulate loyalty amongst consumers.

Following a similar structure to Thursday, after the keynote delegates split from the main group to attend a mixture of sessions covering topics such as digital IP, managing culture change and technology, how to exploit social media and the power of digital content. The conference concluded with an insight into what digital success looks like from one of Microsoft’s leading marketers, Colm Bracken.

Hello Business has been branded a phenomenal success by organisers and delegates alike, covering a breadth of subjects, all of which are relevant in our ever evolving digital society. The organisers would like to thank all of those involved in the project and if you have any questions to please do get in contact.

All material covered throughout the conference will be made available shortly on the website.
